World Language Literacy
Dec 17, 2018
Villa Madonna Academy High School/Junior High is excited to be participating in two new programs to promote Global Competency and Language Literacy among its students. The Global Seal of Biliteracy and the Global Citizenship Certificate Program recognize students’ efforts to broaden their understanding of the world around them and earn proficiency in a second language.
The Global Seal of Biliteracy program recognizes those who have achieved literacy in English and a second language. This is done through standardized testing. Students at Villa who wish to earn the seal must take either the Advanced Placement test in Spanish or French or take the Standards-based Measurement of Proficiency or STAMP test. Villa is the only school in Northern Kentucky to have been approved for the Global Seal of Biliteracy. Upon completion of the requirements, students will receive a Seal affixed to their diploma. Spanish teacher Mrs. Haleigh Hollin was instrumental in bringing this program to Villa. She said, “The Seal is extremely important as it gives students a tangible sign of language competency to show future schools and employers, and with the Global Seal, they have worldwide recognition. This encourages students with a love of language to pursue it and also be rewarded for their efforts. I am so happy to bring this opportunity to Villa and our students, and I’m sure they will excel.”
Villa Madonna Academy also recently became part of the Global Citizenship Certificate Program or GCCP. It recognizes students who have met criteria established by the World Affairs Council of Kentucky and Southern Indiana to expand their global perspectives. They learn about world issues, participate in service programs, and learn to communicate with diverse groups of people. This program takes two to four years to complete and culminates with a certificate that recognizes students work to achieve a high level of global literacy.
