We have all heard about the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education. We have seen the headlines such as the U.S. Department of Commerce projects STEM jobs' growth to almost double non-STEM jobs; the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says that there is a shortage of people to fill important STEM jobs; and, the Pew Research Center reports STEM college majors tend to earn more than non-STEM majors.
Those are compelling reasons to look for a strong STEM program, but there are many other reasons why STEM is important. STEM education boosts creativity and innovation, promotes critical thinking skills, and encourages teamwork. These are tools that help everyone no matter their interests or their future careers.
Villa's STEM program includes a Fab Lab for elementary students. Here, students use robotics, computers, coding, and building materials as an extension of their core curriculum. In high school and junior high, students have opportunities to participate in hands on labs; computer classes; and, college preparatory math, science, and pre-engineering. Valuable lessons are learned everyday in our STEM classes.
