Villa's fourth grade students hosted its second annual Kentucky Derby tribute. The fourth graders studied the Derby as part of their Kentucky lessons this year. They were divided into teams. Each team included a jockey, manager, and trainer. They made a horse, chose a name for it, and designed their silks. When race day came, they paraded onto the field. The grandstand (gym bleachers) were filled with fans from grades K-6. There were also fans from the junior high and high school cheering them on.

The event kicked off with the singing of "My Old Kentucky Home", and then it was post time. The race had an incredible finish. A video replay showed it was too close to call, so in an unprecedented move, the top two jockeys raced again. The winner of the race was Hippy Long Stocking followed by Speed Demon and Sky Rider.

Congratulations to all who participated in this exciting event! Special thanks to fourth grade social studies teacher, Mrs. Schleper, for organizing it.
