Welcome Back From the Boosters!
July 31, 2017
Dear Villa Parents,
Welcome to the 2017 – 2018 school year. The VMA Athletic Boosters had another successful year thanks to your generosity and efforts. The VMA Athletic Boosters Organization, in conjunction with the VMA Athletic Department and the many gracious volunteers, raises funds in support of the athletic activities of all VMA student – athletes, grades 1 -12. These funds are a significant contributor to the Athletic Department budget for the purchase and maintenance of athletic equipment and team uniforms for all of the sports programs at Villa.
This past year, in addition to donating $20,000 to the Athletic Department, the Boosters were able to purchase new, reversible uniforms for many of the elementary basketball teams, and conference championship tee shirts for those HS teams that won their conference outright, including volleyball, boys’ basketball, baseball, and track.
The Boosters traditionally meet on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the gym conference room. Parents of all grade levels are invited to attend Booster meetings and become involved with the Booster organization. We are always looking for fresh ideas that will enable us to raise additional money for the VMA athletic program. Please check the VMA calendar on the website or check school announcements for verification of Booster meeting dates and times.
The VMA Athletic Boosters hold two major fundraisers each year: The Denny Van Houten Memorial Golf Outing and the Shoot-a-thon. The golf outing is in memory of our former boys’ golf coach Denny Van Houten. The 26th annual golf outing took place this year on Monday, June 12 at Summit Hills Country Club in Crestview Hills. This event was a success, and we were able to raise over $7,000 for the Athletic Department. Thank you to all of the Event, Dinner, and Hole Sponsors, Donors, golfers, event volunteers, and golf outing committee members for your efforts in making this event successful. Although the golf format is used, this fund raiser benefits all VMA athletic programs, not just the golf teams. Look for more information in March on next year’s outing.
The Annual Shoot-a-thon typically takes place on a Saturday during the winter season at the VMA gym. All students, grades 1 -12 are encouraged to participate. Coaches and parents are also encouraged to join in the fun. Like the golf outing, this event benefits all athletic programs. We are therefore always searching for ways to include athletes from other sports. Your input and participation in this endeavor would be welcomed. Look for some exciting changes to this year’s event, especially as it pertains to students in grades 9-12. Last year, this event raised over $12,000 for the Athletic Department. A special note of thanks goes out to event chairperson (and Boosters secretary), Dave Smeltzer.
The Elementary Basketball Invitational Tournament, that the Boosters help organize and operate, grew significantly this year, and was able to raise over $3,500 for the Athletic Department. Ajdin Dropic once again spearheaded this event.
In addition to the Shoot-a-thon and golf outing, the VMA Boosters Organization also operates the gym concession stand during the high school volleyball and basketball seasons, and other special events, such as the Elementary Basketball Invitational. This endeavor requires many dedicated volunteers throughout the season to operate smoothly. Please consider volunteering some of your time to work at the concession stand.
Our Treasurers for the past two years, Christy and Kevin Meyer, have decided to pass the baton on to someone else this year. They did a great job serving the Boosters over the past two years, especially their time commitment at the Golf Outing and Shoot a Thon. The position of Treasurer is vacant at this time and the Boosters are searching for someone to fill the position. If you are interested, please contact Eric Schmitt, Mary Pavel, or myself (Dave Thomas). In addition, we welcomed Dave Smeltzer as the Secretary during the year.
Thank you for all that you do to help make VMA such a fantastic environment for our children.
