Welcome Back From the Boosters!

August 17, 2018

Dear Villa Parents,

Welcome to the 2018 – 2019 school year.  The VMA Athletic Boosters had yet another successful year thanks to your generosity and efforts.   The VMA Athletic Boosters Organization, in conjunction with the VMA Athletic Department and the many gracious volunteers, raises funds in support of the athletic activities of all VMA student – athletes, grades 1 -12.  These funds are a significant contributor to the Athletic Department budget for the purchase and maintenance of athletic equipment and team uniforms for all of the sports programs at Villa.

This past year, in addition to donating $20,000 to the Athletic Department, the Boosters donated $2000 towards the purchase of a new motorized cart for outdoor athletic events, paid for coaches KHSAA / NKAC dues, paid for Senior banners, and provided conference championship tee shirts for those HS teams that won their conference outright, including volleyball, girls’ soccer, boys’ cross country, baseball, boys’ tennis, and girls’ track.

The Boosters traditionally meet on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the gym conference room.  Parents of all grade levels are invited to attend Booster meetings and become involved with the Booster organization.  We are always looking for fresh ideas that will enable us to raise additional money for the VMA athletic program.  Please check the VMA calendar on the website or check school announcements for verification of Booster meeting dates and times.

The VMA Athletic Boosters hold two major fundraisers each year:  The Memorial Golf Outing and the Shoot-a-thon. The 27th annual golf outing took place this year on Friday, June 15 at Devou Golf and Event Center in Park Hills.  This event was a success, and we were able to raise over $10,000 for the Athletic Department.  Thank you to all of the Event, Dinner, Hole and Cart Sponsors, Donors, golfers, event volunteers, and golf outing committee members for your efforts in making this event successful. Although the golf format is used, this fund raiser benefits all VMA athletic programs equally, not just the golf teams. Look for more information in March on next year’s outing.

The Annual Shoot-a-thon typically takes place on a Saturday during the winter season at the VMA gym. This year, the Boosters introduced a new event, called Rumble in the Thunderdome, for all students in grades 7- 12 to compliment the Shoot a Thon, which has typically been attended by mostly basketball players in grades 1-8.  Together, the 2 events raised almost $10,000 for the Athletic Department. The Boosters plan to do this again this year.

All VMA basketball players in grades 1-8 are expected to participate in Shoot a Thon, which is also yearbook photo day for the all of the ES and JRHS basketball teams. All students, grades 1 -8 are encouraged to participate. Like the golf outing, Shoot a Thon and Rumble in the Thunderdome benefit all athletic programs equally. All VMA students in grades 7-12 that participate on a High School athletic team are expected to participate in Rumble in the Thunderdome. This is more of a social atmosphere than Shoot a Thon, where everyone tries their skills at a multitude of different athletic competitions, not just the ones that they play.

The Elementary Basketball Invitational Tournament, which the Boosters help organize and operate, had another great year. Over $4,000 was raised for the Athletic Department. Each VMA basketball team in grades 1-8 invites 3 other teams for a 4 team tournament over 2 weekends, giving VMA students the chance to play a home game on their own court, and showcase our wonderful facilities. Ajdin Dropic once again spearheaded this event.

In addition to the aforementioned fund raisers, the VMA Boosters Organization also operates the gym concession stand during the high school volleyball and basketball seasons, and other special events, such as the Elementary Basketball Invitational.  This endeavor requires many dedicated volunteers throughout the season to operate smoothly.  Please consider volunteering some of your time to work at the concession stand.

Our Secretary for the past year, Kelly Danhauer, recently relocated to Cleveland with her family. She did a fantastic job serving the Boosters over the past year, as well as coaching many teams and camps over the past several years. We thank her for her service. The position of Secretary is vacant at this time and the Boosters are searching for someone to fill the position. If you are interested, please contact Eric Schmitt, Mary Pavel, or myself (Dave Thomas).

Thank you for all that you do to help make VMA such a fantastic environment for our children.
